Malm House is the jewel of the Jakobstad-Pietarsaari museum buildings. The current house was completed in 1838, but the Malm family lived here for four generations, from the mid-1700s to the end of the 1800s. Here at Malm House you can learn about the history of Jakobstad, from maritime town to industrial city, as well as the history of the Malm family and of the merchant house.
The Malms were mainly involved in the shipping industry or in trade, and several of them were among the richest men in the country during their lifetime. Commercial Counsellor Peter Malm, for instance, owned the Hercules, which was the first Finnish ship to sail around the world. At the end of the 1840s, Peter owned 12 ships in total, and was thereby the owner of the largest merchant fleet, not only in the city, but in all of Finland.
Malm House boasts beautiful interior spaces and exciting artifacts. The office has been preserved mainly with its original décor, and there are over 50 portraits of ships built in Jakobstad in the house. The ship portraits, mainly in watercolour, gouache or oils, were painted by French, German and English artists during the short intervals when the ships berthed at the harbour.
There are also several other buildings that form part of the museum complex. There is a yard building that houses a country shop, a ladies’ hairdressing salon and a worker’s residence, as well as a small farmhouse and a fishing tackle room. On the museum grounds, you will also find the Tempus exhibition hall and a children’s playground.
